Ways to Quit Smoking - Nicotine Replacement Therapy

What is nicotine replacement therapy (NRT)?
NRT products such as Nicoderm, provide small amounts of nicotine daily to your body. Over time the dosage is decreased until the physical craving for cigarettes has disappeared. This is similar to gradually reducing the number of cigarettes you smoke each day. The big difference is that while you are following an NRT program you cannot smoke at all.

How does it work?

By gradually decreasing the amount of nicotine you ingest each day you reducing your physical dependence on cigarettes. You will reach a point where your body no longer has a physical craving for nicotine.

Are they Successful?
People who quit smoking using one of the NRT products are twice as successful as those who quit cold turkey. However you still need to conquer the psychological  (non-physical) need for a cigarette. This can easily happen if you are stressed, or in situations like bars or restaurants, where you used to smoke. Fortunately today many places like restaurants and bars no longer permit smoking, which reduces the opportunities and temptation.
